Spicy Avocado Hummus

Whenever I am hosting a game night at our apartment, I love making homemade hummus. It takes just a little forethought and the ability to press the power button on the food processor. The plus side is, everyone thinks I’m awesome when all I really did was put the ingredients together and blend! WIN-WIN.

This Spicy Avocado Hummus is a spin on my Avocado Hummus that adds just a little kick to one of my most requested recipes. The avocado compliments the zest and deep flavor of the tahini. Tahini is a ground sesame seed paste, similar to peanut butter. It is a creamy, oily, and smooth nut butter rich in calcium. The key to good hummus is to let the flavor of chickpeas to not be overwhelmed by the lemon and garlic, and this recipe has just the right balance.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans (I used canned, and them cook them for 10 min on the stove top)
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 jalepeno
  • 3 tablespoon tahini
  • ½ lime, juiced
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • ⅓ cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients in a food processor, fitted with blade. Whirl away until smooth.
  2. To serve, top hummus with garbanzo beans, fresh cilantro, sliced avocado, olive oil, or a combination of them all.
